I've painted popcorn ceilings with a special roller cover - check at the paint store for the recommended roller. Use flat paint - no sheen on popcorn ceilings! Good luck! We recently moved into a ranch, not my style, but, we wanted the acreage and it has a very nice setting. I hoping to start tackling some projects this fall. Onece I get rid of more stuff..LOL Freecycle is a great place to do that I found and it doesn't end up in the dump.
