The ranch style home has been a mainstay in home designs since the 1930s.  It is an informal style that lends itself to various interior designs.  If you’re tired of the same look, you may be thinking about a change; but do you know how to remodel a ranch style house?

The ranch style house is considered to be simple with its rectangular shape and low-pitched gable roof.  Of course, there are variations including having an L-shape or U-shaped floor plan, but they’re pretty easy to recognize because of how similar they look.

Do you need more space in your kitchen or bedroom?  You might want to put on an addition.  Would you like to change the look of your bathrooms by updating the surfaces?  Or are you ready to change the flooring?  The nice thing about a ranch style house is that you can make these changes and more.

Know what it is you’d like to do.  If you’d like to lighten up your house, consider adding skylights in rooms that may be a little bit dark.  Do your ceilings seem to be too low?  If you have the room, why not raise the ceiling by a few feet?  Whatever it is you’d like to do, decide ahead of time if you can do the work or if it would be better to have a contractor.

If you’re going to use a contractor to do the work, create a budget to get the work done and then figure in an additional 15% for anything unexpected.  It’s better to plan for the remodel costing more and having some left over than trying to cut costs and not have enough.

Don’t skimp on the plan for the remodel. You’ll want to do some research before hiring a professional architect or design/build contractor so there won’t be any surprises.  Ask friends who’ve had remodeling done or with the builder’s association where you live to get a list of qualified professionals.

It would be best to have a contract stating what will be done, how much it will cost, and when it will be completed.  It would be best to keep communication lines open your contractor in case there are changes to be made after you get into the project.

There are many reasons to think about making changes to your home.  When you think about how to remodel a ranch home, it would be best to not go it alone.  Get help with the design and construction to be sure your plans are successful; you’ll be glad to have the work done.
